Novice Investing

About:
Novice Investing is hard work. Not only do you have to try to invest properly, but you'll be faced with a mountain of advice and a myriad of options whilst using your own money to learn. Hard indeed.

I have been a Novice Investor for almost 3 years and am still learning. My hope is that this group will become a hub of information that will allow others to learn from mistakes as well as ask professionals advice.

Ultimately, I know there is an army of Investors out there that want to know how to invest and I want them to be here, discussing and chatting to make it an easier mountain to climb.

The three barriers to entry are: Not enough money, time or knowledge. I'll help you to smash through all those barriers.

Some sort of Index Tracker

Hi there i was thinking over the weekend that the stock market is generally pretty stable over the long term. I want to put some savings away so thought a tracker for FTSE100 might be a good idea. Or should i be looking further afield. Perhaps a US tracker or one that tracks both? Any insight or experiences would be great F

If I was going to invest in trackers, two things I'd consider are how closely they follow the index itself and the charges applied.

Fidelity's China's Special Situations Fund

I was just wondering if anybody has invested in Bolton's fund at fidelity, pretty much 30% down, ouch

Big decision Anthony Bolton says he will announce by July whether he will continue to run the Fidelity China Special Situations investment trust beyond next year. In the video interview, Bolton says: ‘I always said I was going there for a finite length of time; I wasn’t going to end my days in Hong Kong.' Noting that he ...

Beware the sharks!

If you're being tempted to invest for the first time in a product of your bank and with a sales staff guarantee of profits without risk - then beware!!! This might cost you your money and a lotta anguish. Novice investors seem to be the feeding ground for the banks and investment houses. The products come with misleading ...

Risk profiling is not that easy to explain to a novice or even to more sophisticated investors given the nature of investments being often spread across a range of sectors and individual company holdings. These holdings themselves will each carry their own degree of risk profile which has hopfully been assessed by the fund ...

Spread Betting....

Bombshell. On my blog I am talking about SPread Betting and how I think it might well be a chance to make some money in this type of a market (volatile) However I am cautious as this is like playing with fire. Spread betting means you are betting on a share/comodity/entity rising or falling and you place a bet per point. E.G. ...

We Are Wall Street, by anonymous

This was circulating emails a while ago i wonder if the author stands by what he says!!! "We are Wall Street. It's our job to make money. Whether it's a commodity, stock, bond, or some hypothetical piece of fake paper, it doesn't matter. We would trade baseball cards if it were profitable. I didn't hear America complaining ...

Some of these Wall St people are living on another planet!

This weeks discussion - Bonds.

Has anyone out there bought into bonds in any way shape or form? Big question I know but I am looking into them and wondered if anyone over a medium investment strategy (5 - 10 years) has anything they think is a good idea or has worked well for them?

Moody's have downgraded 12 UK financials

I must say this sounds worrying and depressing, surely people like Nationwide would never be allowed to fail?

What does AA- A+ and AA- spell for us? Aaaaaaaargh! Sorry bad joke. This is a problem with ratings agencies, they rate the banks down for a reason as they have to hold more capital, are facing lots and lots of regulatory pressure and have trouble getting money out to people through morgages etc. So this is an example of them ...

Gold anyone?

I have been looking for an entry point into gold and it's now standing at an attractive $1700 an oz. Surely that's a good point to get in. The mass sell off last week was weird in that with gold taking a hit when it would usually rise, it will rise next time something goes wrong? I believe it will break the $2000 limit,as do ...

Russia...

Everyone is talking about China at the moment but I was wondering what people were thinking on for Russia? They have some highly restrictive laws and are hard to do business with. So when will this change? Im not expecting a date but I have a company share - AMC - that's looking for some licence approvals and a 6 month timeframe ...

Hi there, Thanks for the link to the F.T. Good work! I know Russia is a troubled country and I am sure I am not the first to say this, but surely they can start to get things sorted out. I am still looking to see if there is anything that's less risky over there, but the share I have has been floating up and down in the same ...

Low interest rate environment offers big opportunity for dividend investor

Saw this the other day in regards to dividend investing, Despite recent market conditions, the current investment environment makes dividend investing attractive for several reasons: - A relatively high dividend yield compared to bond yields which could attract further capital from bond markets to equity markets. - ...

Lie back and think of England

Well, that wasn’t much fun was it? Yet anther week of massive uncertainty in the markets and a sideways shift briefly turned up towards the end. It’s still looking like a good buying opportunity for some shares. The case I made last week for investing in Barclays has been rewarded with a small uptick from 149 to 158, but ...

A mistake learned

Hi everyone - I'm looking forward to exchanging some ideas and help. I started only a few years ago to play a little with a pot of £2,000. One thing I've learned is just as you shouldn't sell a rising share too early, you also shouldn't hold on to a losing share too long. If you have picked the wrong one, the sooner you can let ...

Is now a buying opportunity too good to miss?

This is my blog post for the week. Let me know what you think. Wow. When I was talking last week abut being able to buy into the stock collapse again, I didn’t think it would be so soon. The markets tumbled again with Investors fearing pretty much everything. If someone offered a round of teas too loudly in a city office it ...

Technology Shares and Companies

If you get that crystal ball, let me borrow it sometime! Tech stock are difficult for me for a couple of reasons. They are like drug companies in that they require a 'breakthrough' technology to be competitive as in the case of Apple.
