Should I buy a house now??? or will it be a mistake???

asked by Petra Radziewski posted 3 Years ago at 15:33
Hi all I've been fortunate enough, to be given money by my parents to buy a flat. They live abroad and think that me buying a flat in central London will be a great way to have something secure for the rest of my life! However i fear that property prices might fall, luckily i will be able to buy outright. The other option is to bank the money and live in a rental of the interest, however rent prices seem to be increasing to a rate that it would not make any difference as the money paid in rent would be the equivalent of the decrease in value of the bought property. And also interest rates are so low at the moment that it might not be worth it. I don't want to invest in anything risky as this is my parents gift to me and they want to see it put to good use for their darling daughter. I also understand that if i do hold out and rent I'll be able to hold out i might be able to buy a nicer flat for my money in a couple of years time. I appreciate i'm in a very lucky position but also a very tricky one. Thanks ;) ( sorry for the long winded post!!)

Hi Petra

I fear that nobody really knows whats going to happen in the housing market, you may be lucky and be able to buy in a prime London location, I think if this is the case you are in an easier place as they seem to be much more insulated against fluctuation than the rest of the country. You also have to think what your priorities are if you want a place to call home and stay for the foreseeable future then fluctuation in price won't matter as much, it might be the case that you buy and in 10 years time you sell for the same price. In the mean time you would have lived and enjoyed a place you really love (you can't put a price on that!). It seems that your risk adversed which in many respects is good, and would make sense to buy a property, as its always yours. A good article was writen a few days ago check this out as it can explain things much more coherently than me (http://www.totalinvestor.co.uk/i/blogs/show/133) Good Luck
