Difference between leasehold and Freehold

Recently i've been searching for a property in London. I have recently become confused about leasehold and freehold. Some friends say it doesn't matter if it's leasehold if the lease is over 125yrs, others have said that if it's less than 100yrs the price decreases by 1 percent for ever year less (than the equivalent freehold value) Also is it your right to purchase a lease hold extension if there is a certain amount of time left on the lease. I hope someone out there can clear this up for me.
