Putting a price on your life!

I have recently made the decision that I need life insurance, and I have now come to the massive dilemma of deciding just how much coverage I actually need. Putting a price on my life is turning out to be a very difficult thing to do, and I am in need of some guidance. At present plucking a number out of thin air and using that as my coverage amount seems like an attractive idea! I am keen not to end up paying more than necessary because I have too much coverage. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to go about calculating how much insurance one needs? Thanks in advance for your help. Mike.
